Speed Performance

We ran NordVPN through 20 speed test iterations on a dedicated 1 Gbps connection using the fastest available protocol (NordLynx (WireGuard)), tested at peak and off-peak hours across multiple server regions:

91.5
Avg Download (Mbps)
72.8
Avg Upload (Mbps)

Avg Latency

NordVPN delivered solid speeds across most test sessions with minimal variance between runs.

Streaming Performance

NordVPN reliably unblocks Netflix across multiple regions, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video. It does not use labeled streaming servers – standard servers in relevant countries typically work. Obfuscated servers improve reliability in networks that actively block VPN traffic. In our tests, 18 out of 20 server attempts successfully unlocked the target streaming service, with the two failures resolved by switching to a nearby server.

Gaming

NordVPN's NordLynx protocol (built on WireGuard) keeps latency overhead low at 11–15ms in our tests. The Meshnet feature creates an encrypted private network between your own devices, enabling LAN-style multiplayer sessions across the internet without a central server – a practical and unusual feature for gamers. Dedicated IP addresses (available as an add-on) reduce CAPTCHA frequency on platforms that flag shared VPN IPs.

Security & Encryption

NordVPN uses NordLynx (WireGuard) as its primary protocol. All connections are protected with AES-256-GCM encryption. The kill switch cut all traffic within 1–2 seconds of disconnection in our tests, and DNS leak checks via DNS leak testing tools returned clean results on all servers tested.

NordVPN's Threat Protection suite is one of the most comprehensive built-in security tools among VPN providers. It blocks ads, trackers, and malware at the DNS level – and can do so without an active VPN connection. File downloads are scanned for threats. Double VPN routes traffic through two servers in different countries for an additional encryption layer. Onion over VPN routes through the Tor anonymity network. Obfuscated servers disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS. All features are included in the standard subscription.

Supported protocols: NordLynx (WireGuard)OpenVPN

Privacy & Logging Policy

No-logs policy: NordVPN does not log IP addresses, connection timestamps, session data, or DNS queries. The privacy policy clearly defines what is and is not collected.

NordVPN is headquartered in Panama, outside all major intelligence-sharing alliances. The no-logs policy has been independently audited by Deloitte across multiple rounds and penetration-tested by VerSprite. A past breach of a single Finnish server was disclosed transparently – no user data was exposed – and NordVPN subsequently hardened its infrastructure and adopted a colocated server model. Transparency reports are published regularly. NordVPN is owned by Nord Security, which also owns Surfshark.

Apps & Interface

The NordVPN Windows app is feature-rich and well-organized. The map-based interface allows clicking on countries directly. The server list sidebar includes specialty categories: Double VPN, Obfuscated, Onion over VPN, P2P, and Dedicated IP servers are clearly distinguished. Threat Protection, Meshnet, Dark Web Monitor, and Split Tunneling settings are accessible from the main dashboard. The app supports 10 simultaneous device connections. Power users will appreciate the depth; new users may need a few minutes to find all the options, but the interface is intuitive once familiar.

Pricing & Plans

All paid plans include a money-back guarantee. The longer-term plans offer the best per-month value.

Limitations

NordLynx is the recommended fast protocol, but native WireGuard (outside of NordLynx) is not supported. Renewal pricing can be higher after the initial promotional period. Nord Security's ownership of both NordVPN and Surfshark reduces competition at the premium end of the market.

Our Verdict

NordVPN: Very Good VPN for PC

NordVPN is the best choice for security-focused users who want the most comprehensive feature set available. Threat Protection, Meshnet, multiple independent audits, and a Panama jurisdiction make it the most defensible option for users with serious privacy requirements.
